AMD promises learning lab roll-out

[ Johannesburg, 10 August 2007 ] - Chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is to roll out further learning laboratories at South African schools in coming months, the company says.
Newly-appointed country manager Imi Mosaheb says that following the successful launch of the first laboratory at the Nelson R Mandela High School, in Gugulethu, Cape Town, in April, "we are currently conducting site visits to the next several schools that will be rolled out in various parts of the country during the second half of 2007".<div class="feedflare">

George Bush Visits Local Projects in Brazil, Underlining the Importance of AMD's 50x15 Partnership

During their recent five-nation Latin American trip, President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush visited Meninos do Morumbi, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) comprised of over 4,000 underprivileged children and teenagers in the city of São Paulo. At Meninos do Morumbi (literally translated as Boys from Morumbi), students (girls and boys) participate in activities such as dance, music, photography, and sports, and take classes in English and computer studies. One of the organization's primary goals is increasing digital inclusion and computer literacy among youth in Brazil, a natural fit for the 50x15 Initiative, founded by AMD.<div class="feedflare">

AMD and Architecture for Humanity Announce World’s Largest Architecture Prize at TED 2007

In Monterey, California each year, more than 1,000 thought-leaders from the Technology, Entertainment, and Design industries come together at the TED Conference to learn, dream, and find new ways to improve the world in which we live. At last year’s conference, Cameron Sinclair, founder of Architecture for Humanity (AFH), was awarded one of the coveted TED Prizes, which granted him one wish to change the world. Sinclair and AFH set out to challenge designers to reach beyond the traditional bounds of architecture to develop innovative solutions that improve global living conditions through the implementation of the Open Architecture Network (OAN), an open source online gathering place that brings together architects, designers, and community organizers to freely share blueprints, ideas, and resources for improvement projects.<div class="feedflare">

Inveneo Certified ICT Partner Program Creates Local Expertise and Economic Opportunity

Tim Kreutter is not easily discouraged. During the past 15 years, he had overcome innumerable obstacles to build the Cornerstone Leadership Academy (CLA) in order to give some of Uganda’s poorest children a chance for a brighter future. CLA provides a springboard to higher education for poor but exceptionally talented students from rural and often war-ravaged areas, by integrating rigorous academics, healthcare services, and leadership training in a supportive and nurturing environment. Thanks to CLA, when they are ready for college, some 300 young adults have been competing well with more advantaged Ugandan students in virtually every subject area.<div class="feedflare">

50x15 Partner Program Serves as a Crossroads for Digital Inclusion Initiatives

By working with strategic partners throughout the world, the 50x15 Initiative has helped provide Internet access and computing capability to millions of people in high-growth markets since the program's inception in 2004. We've learned through these efforts that no single solution will meet the computing needs of the 5.4 billion people not yet connected, and no single company can do it alone. Successfully connecting 50 percent of the world's people to the Internet by 2015 will require cooperation among many companies, non-governmental organizations, government bodies, and thought leaders throughout the world.<div class="feedflare">

Momentum

Momentum is a remarkable thing. The most significant changes in the world are driven by momentum, both positive and negative.
As we approach the waning months of 2007, we've seen amazing developments in both healthcare and education. There are new, positive, innovative models out there that are really working, and if we can help more people understand that, the more momentum we'll achieve. But for momentum to really occur, our voices are not enough. We need your voice too.<div class="feedflare">

Give 1 Get 1: Join One Laptop Per Child to Help Transform Education and Learning in Developing Countries

CAMBRIDGE, MA, Sept. 24, 2007 – Any nation’s most precious resource is its children. Most of the nearly two billion children in the developing world are inadequately educated, or in some cases, receive no education at all. One in three does not complete the fifth grade. The individual and societal consequences of this chronic global crisis are profound. Children are consigned to poverty and isolation – never knowing what the light of learning could mean in their lives.<div class="feedflare">
